The Molossian Navy is more than just the military of our nation, it also has a scientific purpose, exploring the aquatic realms of our world. To this end, the Navy recently deployed to Monterey Bay, on the Central California coast, there to investigate sea life in it’s native environment. Monterey Bay is home to a plethora of marine life, drawn there by the fairly temperate waters and unique underwater geography. A wide variety of marine mammals call the Bay home, or pass through on regular migratory paths. The Navy’s contingent, including The President, First Lady and Chief Constable, set out on the afternoon of Monday, 18 April, aboard the vessel Princess Monterey. Passing a lively contingent of California Sea Lions and equally rowdy population of Cormorants, the vessel made for the open sea. Shortly thereafter humpback whales were seen along the horizon, their tail flukes flashing above the waves and spouts blowing like geysers. After a fairly brief viewing of humpback whales, the ship diverted to a investigate pod of Risso’s dolphins, an atypical, bulbous-headed member of the dolphin family, closely related to pilot whales. After inspecting the Risso’s dolphins, the ship and it’s crew of amateur scientists return to the observation of whales, following several individuals around the Bay, from a respectful distance, and culminating in a pair of whales surfacing within just a few Nortons from the boat. It was amazing and educational experience, unique in the annals of our Navy. After returning to port, the Navy contingent explored along the shore, including tidepools at the end of Monterey Peninsula and sea lions and otters off Point Lobos. In all this was a very successful marine mission, advancing scientific study in our nation and raising the bar for our Navy’s accomplishments. Hooray for the Molossian Navy!
